June 17, 2020: MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT, Summer Office Access & Fall Planning
Dear RLAS-116 Staff & Families:
I hope that you are enjoying the beautiful summer weather that has arrived and have had a chance to relax following a very busy Spring filled with remote learning responsibilities. As we continue into summer, I’d like to share with you what RLAS-116 is doing in preparation for the partial reopening of our offices this month and the instructional planning for Fall 2020.
On Friday, May 29, Illinois entered Phase 3 of the Restore Illinois Plan. Phase 3 has loosened some of the restrictions initially placed to help reduce the spread of COVID-19. One of the opportunities Phase 3 provides for is a partial return to work for our administration and office staff members at district offices and the schools. Members of our team have been meeting continuously to develop safe plans for a partial reopening. As of Wednesday, June 17, we have reopened our offices with up to 50% of our staff on any given day. It is important to note that all visitors to our buildings must schedule an appointment prior to coming to the office.
As you know, the impact of COVID-19 has been drastic. The transition to remote learning this Spring was difficult for many. I, again, applaud our staff, students and parents as we worked together to make this transition as smooth as possible. Our students’ success was due to the strong partnerships that were immediately formed and strengthened between school and home.
School districts in Illinois are awaiting specific guidance from both the Illinois State Board of Education and the Restore Illinois Plan. This guidance will assist us in developing and finalizing a solid instructional plan for the 2020-2021 school year. RLAS-116 will be prepared for a variety of scenarios that may include traditional, blended and/or full-remote learning plans. Regardless of where we land, you should be assured that we are confident students will be provided an outstanding learning environment.
Going forward, you can expect to receive email updates from my office regarding our progress on the 1st and 15th of each month, minimally, until the start of the 2020-2021 school year.

Apreciables Familias y Personal del Distrito Escolar-116:Espero que estén disfrutando del hermoso clima de verano y la gran oportunidad que tenemos de disfrutar un poco después de una muy ocupada primavera llena de responsabilidades sobre el aprendizaje remoto. A medida que continuamos en tiempo de verano, me gustaría compartir con ustedes lo que el Distrito 116 está haciendo en preparación de la reapertura parcial de nuestras oficinas este mes y la planificación de instrucción académica para el otoño 2020.
El viernes 29 de mayo, el estado de Illinois comenzó la Fase 3 del Plan de Restauración de Illinois. El éxito de nuestros estudiantes se llevó a cabo en gran parte por las sólidas relaciones que se formaron y se fortalecieron inmediatamente entre la escuela y los hogares.
Los distritos escolares de Illinois están esperando la orientación específica de la Junta de Educación del Estado de Illinois, así como del Plan de Restauración de Illinois. May 6, 2020: Message from the Superintendent
Dear RLAS-116 Families:
The 2019-20 school year has not ended up how we would have hoped or planned for with the onset of COVID-19 and the closure of schools. However, I am so very impressed and proud of the work that has been done by the entire team to ensure the best possible situation for all students. When I say team, I mean all of us. It’s every single staff member of this great District AND our students and parents. I know that these weeks have been challenging on so many levels. We continue to be so grateful to our families as traditional classroom instruction has entered the walls of your home.
As we near the end of the school year, we would like to share some details that vary from our initial school calendar year. The Illinois State Board of Education has permitted all public school districts to utilize up to 5 Remote Learning Planning Days this school year. These days are to be used for planning for all types of educational structure scenarios in the Fall.
RLAS-116 will be using 3 of the available 5 Remote Learning Planning Days (Tuesday, May 26 - Thursday, May 28). The last day of any new assignments will be Wednesday, May 20. Thursday, May 21 and Friday, May 22 will be used to finalize all student assignments, class meetings, mastery exams, etc. This means that the last official day for students this year will be Friday, May 22.
While we are all yearning for a return to our normal classroom instruction inside the school, we must continue to plan as if there will still be some sort of remote learning requirements in the Fall. There is much to be learned from our remote learning time this Spring. We will be working diligently to plan for and exceed all new and improved guidelines for instruction in the Fall should remote learning need to continue in any capacity.

Estimadas familias de RLAS-116:El año escolar 2019-20 no ha terminado como esperábamos o planeábamos con el inicio de COVID-19 y el cierre de las escuelas. Sin embargo, estoy muy impresionado y orgulloso del trabajo que ha hecho todo el equipo para garantizar la mejor situación posible para todos los estudiantes. APRIL 17, 2020: GOVERNOR PRITZKER'S ANNOUNCEMENT RE: SCHOOL CLOSURES
Dear RLAS-116 Parents/Guardians:
This afternoon, Governor Pritzker announced that all in-person classroom instruction will be suspended for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. While we have been planning for this decision, we still acknowledge that this is still very difficult to digest.
RLAS-116 is very fortunate in that we are now able to provide E-Learning instruction to all students in grades PK-12. While this is not ideal, we will continue to ensure that students have the best possible learning experiences for the remainder of this school year. We ask you, as parents and guardians, to continue to foster the importance of education to your children during these trying times. We will partner with you by providing you with the educational resources you need for your family.
Allow me to reemphasize that we know that our students, staff and families are doing their very best during this school closure time period and that is all we can ask for. Please continue to stay engaged during this process. There will certainly be questions as we progress through this E-Learning structure. Please continue to work with your child’s teachers and school administration. We are here to help you.

MARCH 31, 2020 - DISTRICT UPDATE RE: GOVERNOR PRITZKER ANNOUNCMENT
Dear RLAS-116 Families:
Governor Pritzker announced on Tuesday, March 31 that he plans to sign a new Executive Order that will extend the Stay-at-Home order through April 30, 2020. While this was anticipated, we acknowledge that this puts additional hardship on many across our District and community. This is unchartered territory for everyone. Please take your time and do your best in these trying times.
Our District has been working proactively to establish remote learning plans in the event the closure was to be extended. Know that we are ready!
Middle & High School
Our middle and high school students will continue with their established E-Learning plans throughout the closure. Teachers and administration are available to both students and parents. Please contact them via email if you need assistance.
Elementary (Grades PK-5)
This week, students should be completing their second week of work from the packets that were distributed on March 13. Weeks 3 and 4 work packets are being mailed to families this week. Students should begin their work on these packets starting Monday, April 6. If for some reason you do not receive your child’s packet by Saturday you may access them on the E-Learning tab of our website at www.rlas-116.org or contact your school principal via email.
District staff are working diligently to gather all available technology devices from across our schools so that we are able to deploy them to our elementary students to use at home. A deployment plan is being finalized with tentative plans to distribute the devices to our elementary students the week of April 6. Deployment details will be communicated to families later this week.
Our elementary teachers began training this week in preparation for E-Learning. They will begin to build their “online” classrooms next week. We plan to begin official E-Learning at the elementary level on Monday, April 20.
Please remember, we know this is a challenging time and implementing an E-Learning structure for your elementary-aged child at home may prove challenging. We will be here every step of the way to support our parents and students.
Grab-n-Go Meal Distribution
We will continue to serve free Grab-n-Go breakfast/lunch meals to all RLAS-116 children Monday-Friday, 8:00am-11:00am, at Round Lake High School, Round Lake Middle School, Beach Elementary, Ellis Elementary, Murphy Elementary and Village Elementary throughout the entire closure. This distribution is easy. You drive up, let the servers know how many meals are needed, and then grab them off the serving table.

El Gobernador Pritzker anunció el martes 31 de marzo que piensa firmar una nueva Orden Ejecutiva para extender la orden de Quedarse en Casa hasta el 30 de abril del 2020. Aunque esta medida era de esperarse, reconocemos que pone en una situación difícil a muchos en nuestro Distrito y comunidad. Es territorio desconocido para todos. Nuestro Distrito ha estado trabajando de manera proactiva para establecer planes de aprendizaje virtuales en caso se extendiera el cierre. ¡Estamos preparados!

Nuestros estudiantes de escuela secundaria y superior continuarán con sus planes de aprendizaje virtual, E-learning, previamente establecidos hasta el cierre. Good evening.
During the school closure days of Monday, March 16 through Thursday, March 19, your middle or high school student is expected to participate in their classes via an E-Learning Model. This is in an effort to offer an uninterrupted educational experience for your child.
Teachers will be providing students with learning activities on a daily basis through their Canvas or Google Classroom. Students are expected to sign on daily and complete activities and work as assigned. Teachers will make themselves available digitally and will post their available hours on their classroom pages.
If a family does not have home internet service, they may contact Comcast as they may be eligible for Comcast Internet Essentials. Comcast is waiving program fees for the next 60 days. Information is available at https://internetessentials.com/. Families having difficulty with accessing home internet services should contact Kurt Rohlwing, Director of Secondary Education at krohlwing@rlas-116.org.

Dear RLAS-116 Families:
Due to the rapidly evolving COVID-19 Pandemic, RLAS-116 has made a decision to close the District effective Monday, March 16, 2020 through at least Friday, March 27, 2020. We will continue to assess the progress of this situation and will communicate any changes as additional information becomes available.
Please note: We have NOT had a confirmed case of COVID-19 in our District and/or community.
Students are being prepared for alternative learning options today, including:
Elementary students (Grades PK-5) – Work packets with instructions are being backpacked home with students today.
Middle & High School students – E-Learning instructions are being shared with students today.
The District is developing a plan for how breakfast and lunch distribution may continue throughout the closure. We will share these details as soon as possible.
Know that we are monitoring this situation closely and will communicate regularly. Please continue to monitor your email and/or the District website at www.rlas-116.org for additional updates.

Hello,
As news of COVID-19 continues to be at the top of the headlines and a concern of many, we wanted to share an update with you.
Please be aware that the District has a Pandemic Preparedness Team (required by Board policy) and it has been working over the last few weeks to further develop established procedures related to issues such as COVID-19. We have been in regular contact with the Lake County Health Department to ensure that our work in this area aligns with best practice measures. The District continues to follow CDC recommended cleaning procedures across the District and is monitoring absence rates due to flu-like symptoms by school.
As a reminder, to help prevent the spread of illness, staff and students are strongly encouraged to stay home from work/school when experiencing any of the following symptoms:
Has fever of 100.4 degrees (oral) or higherHas cramps and/or vomiting
Has sore throat with fever
Has persistent cough (dry or productive)
Has diarrhea (three or more episodes in 24 hours)
Has symptoms that prevent him/her from participating in school/work, such as:
Excessive tiredness or lack of appetite
Headaches, body aches, earaches
Severe sore throat
In addition, as stories of possible exposures continue to develop across the country, it is very important that we communicate. If you have any concerns or have heard from students and/or parents regarding potential exposures, please notify your school administration. They will then immediately notify the Pandemic Preparedness Team. All reports will be thoroughly investigated and if there is a need to communicate results of the investigation, we will do so.If you have any questions about this information, please contact your school administrator.
