I have the most wonderful class of students here at the high school. I have been the Educational Life Skills teacher at Round Lake High School since August of 2008. Prior to that, I was home with my children after teaching students with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities in the Champaign-Urbana and Muncie, IN, school systems for six years.
In our classroom, we focus on preparing our students for future skills in the area of independent living, with an emphasis on vocational, community, and recreation/leisure skills. We visit the community regularly and sell coffee to staff members on Friday mornings. These activities help the students to improve their communication, money management, social interaction, shopping, and job skills. When not involved in one of these activities, the students attend elective classes and work on functional academics within the classroom.
