Dr. Lisa Steffen

Principal

My name is Lisa Steffen and I am proud and excited to be starting my fifth year as the principal at John T. Magee and my seventeenth year working for the Round Lake Areas School District.  My first ten years in Round Lake were spent as a Spanish teacher at RLHS.  I then moved into administration with two years at RLHS prior to transitioning to JTMMS.  I love working in Round Lake and I take so much pride in the work done on behalf of the schools in our community.  Over the past seventeen years, the Round Lake community has welcomed me and my ability to achieve biliteracy in English and Spanish is in part due to the incredibly kind and supportive students and families in this community.

I grew up in Lakeville, Minnesota in a family-focused on education.  My father was a member of the school board for numerous years and my grandparents were teachers.  I moved to Illinois in 2003 where my amazing husband and I are now raising our two wonderful children.  My daughter, Olivia, is entering 4th grade and my son, Oscar, is starting middle school in 6th grade.  As a mother of a child entering middle school and another child close behind, I am aware of the joys and challenges that this age presents.  Your child’s middle school experience is crucial in him/her developing a strong social and emotional well-being, as well as a successful academic experience to prepare him/her for high school. Please know that your child’s success in middle school is my number one priority.

Your partnership with us is greatly valued!  A good education is the key to future success and a great home to school connection is the foundation!  As parents, it is essential we set a tone for the importance of why our children attend school.  Please take time each day to talk to your child about his/her experiences at Magee. We will send a monthly newsletter that will share information about what students are learning in all classes.  This is a great tool to find information that you can ask your child about.  This will help develop both academic and social skills that are vital to your child’s success.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to me, my team, or your child’s teachers if there is any way we can further support you or your child in middle school. Let’s make it a great year!

Assistant Principal

My name is Stephanie Mitchell and I am excited to start my third year as the Assistant Principal for Curriculum and Instruction at John T. Magee Middle School. I am honored to work in the Round Lake Area School District, which is known for its dedication to educational excellence, but more importantly, to all children. Over the past 13 years, I have worked as a teacher and administrator, but I consider my most important job to be an advocate for lifelong learning.

I get the pleasure of spending a significant amount of time with your children, and I enjoy getting to know their personalities, learning styles and interests. I will celebrate their successes, small and large and will encourage them every day. I want your children to know they are valued and truly have a special place in our school community. My goal is to ensure that all children are healthy, happy and safe, so they may learn as much as they can. This has been my philosophy since I began my career teaching. I started our in education teaching middle school math for ten years and then was also a math instructional coach.

My greatest achievement comes not professionally, but personally, as I am the mother of two beautiful children: Nolan (5) and Kullen (3). People often say I treat all children in my school as if they were my own. I even have a tendency to refer to my students as “my kids!” Please know I will work tirelessly to ensure all your children have the best possible experiences while at John T. Magee.

Mr. Matt Zidron

My name is Matt Zidron and I am excitedly starting my first year as Assistant Principal of Student Services at John T. Magee Middle School. Prior to becoming an assistant principal, I taught English and Language Arts at Round Lake High School and Magee. I have worked in education for the last ten years, and I am excited to start a new adventure at JTMMS.

My true passion is working with children to help them gain confidence in themselves and their education. I love to see students take ownership of their learning and grow as learners and people. I try to facilitate self-reflection and self-awareness in every student in an effort to help them become 21st-century global citizens.

Outside of school, I have two sons, Lincoln who is three and Harrison who is one, that keep me extremely busy. I spend my afternoons and weekends chasing them around the park or the house. Just like the students, I try to invoke a sense of curiosity and wonder in my own children. I look forward to providing a safe and comfortable place for every student to explore and learn about themselves.
