Mr. David Higgs

WELCOME TO ROUND LAKE MIDDLE SCHOOL!

Your child’s middle school experience is crucial in them becoming a young adult and for their successful transition to High School.  Our staff is committed to your child, you and the Round Lake community. We will work tirelessly to ensure educational excellence for every student both in and out of the classroom. During this crossroads into young adulthood, we will work hard to increase student mastery of subjects and skills as well as encourage them to get involved in different activities, clubs, and hobbies.

I am honored and privileged to be serving in my seventh year as Principal of Round Lake Middle School. I came to this position in 2014 after having been a Principal at every level PK-12 in smaller but similar districts I am a lifelong learner and believe that education combined with hard work and a positive outlook are keys to increased opportunities. Major milestones of my lifelong learning was earning a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in History from North Park University, a Master’s degree in Curriculum & Instruction from Northern Illinois University, a Master’s degree in Educational Administration from Northern Illinois University and an Educational Specialist degree in Educational Leadership from Western Illinois University.  However, the best learning experiences for me have come from the students in my buildings.   I know the value of a good education but more importantly, I also know the value of family.  I am blessed with a wonderful wife and three fantastic children ages 17, 13 & 4. My philosophy for leading a school is centered on one question, “How would you want your own child treated?”  This a question I ask my staff all the time to keep us focused on what is best for the individual student as well as for all of the students.

Your partnership with us is greatly valued!   As parents, there are many ways you can be involved in the life of this school and the most important is setting a tone for the importance of why they are at school.  Please take the time each day to ask them what they have learned and about their experiences that day.   Our goal in working with you is to ensure that we educate your child both academically and social emotionally. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me, my team or your child’s teacher if there is any way we can further support you or your child along this journey. Let’s make it a great year!

 Respectfully,

 Dave Higgs, Ed.S.

Associate Principal of Curriculum & Instruction

Oftentimes in education, we hear pronouns of your and mine or his and her students, but if we truly want kids to find success we must look at education as an opportunity to co-serve ALL of OUR KIDS.  We know students come to us from different backgrounds and with different needs, but regardless, we owe it to our students to hold them to high expectations that will open doors to their most promising future.  If we are truly co-serving ALL OUR KIDS we can work together to not only hold them to high expectations but support them in reaching those expectations.  I believe we need to educate and value the whole child in the work we do.

I am honored to be your Assistant Principal of Curriculum and Instruction at Round Lake Middle School.  I come to this position having served in two different administrative roles, Director of Teaching and Learning and Associate Principal of Teaching and Learning over the last six years.  Prior to my administrative experiences, I was an elementary teacher for nine years.  I believe all these experiences will assist me in our work at Round Lake Middle School.  I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay in elementary education and my master’s degree in educational leadership from Cardinal Stritch University.  I find great joy in working with and advocating for all students.  I have a passion for working with educators to grow in their instructional practices to ensure all kids have access and opportunity for success.  On a more personal note, I am a mom and wife.  My husband is an Athletic Director in Wisconsin and our four-year-old twins will be starting 4K this fall.

Leadership is not about arriving or gaining titles, rather it is about acknowledging we can always grow and learn from each experience and group of people we lead.  I believe that my willingness to be vulnerable and genuine with those around me is what makes me a kind, compassionate and collaborative leader.  I look forward to fueling my passion and fire, while learning, growing, and co-serving with all of you for years to come.  Thank you for the opportunity to be part of your child’s life, I am excited to meet each of you and co-serve ALL OUR KIDS!

WELCOME TO ROUND LAKE MIDDLE SCHOOL!

Education is one of the greatest professions because we have the opportunity to make a difference everyday in someone's life.  I believe in a growth mindset, that it is always about improving from where you are today to where you will be tomorrow.

I am joining the RLMS family entering my 24th year in education with the last 15 years as an administrator.  After I got my bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, I taught U.S. History and Driver’s Education at Winnebago High School.  While there, I realized that my passion was helping students succeed through mentorship and providing them with resources that help them excel, both academically and socially. Through my experiences, I have enjoyed helping students work through academic and social emotional issues.  Therefore, I pursued a master’s degree in School Counseling from Northern Illinois University and became a guidance counselor.

As a guidance counselor at St. Charles High School (before it split into two separate high schools) and Hoffman Estates High School, I worked with students individually and in groups, on both academic and social-emotional issues, in addition to leading various school wide projects.  I then decided to pursue a master’s degree in School Administration at Northern Illinois University and became the Director of Guidance and Coordinator of Building Assessment at Elgin High School.   In my pursuit of professional growth, I then became the Lake Zurich High School Assistant Principal for Student Services, and the Director of Pupil Personnel Services at Lake Park High School.

During my time at Lake Park High School, I earned an Educational Specialists Degree in School Leadership and a Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from Northern Illinois University.  This past year I was the Principal at Urbana High School which consists of 1,200 students.   At Urbana High School we focused on reducing student failure rates and working with staff on Social Emotional Learning.

It is my goal to work side by side with all students, parents, and staff to work towards a vision that meets the needs of our school.  It is my hope that, as a school community, we can work together to build upon the great tradition that has been well-established at Round Lake Middle School.

Respectfully,

Mitch Berenson Ed.D.
